The COVID-19 pandemic has also affected the digital payment world, as the global online checkout
with digital wallets increased by 6.5% from 2019. In the USA, the digital wallet adoption lagged global
averages and grew from 23.7% to 29.8% of e-commerce transactions.

According to the PYMNTS’
research when comparing 2019 to 2020, the increase in in-store did not correspond with the increase
in mobile wallet use, the use of mobile wallets among all generations dropped compared to 2019.
In a survey done by Statista in 2020 on the payment services used in the USA, 90% used PayPal, 30%
used Venmo, 21% used Google Pay and 20% used Apple pay in the previous year.

While Alipay is the leading payment application in China, Google Pay and PhonePe lead in India, and
PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung pay are the top providers on a global level.

Most of the digital payment applications use tokenization, which adds a layer of security, the original
number is replaced with a temporary number that is sent to the merchant. Apple in its way of
protecting and securing as much as possible had invested in their FaceId to develop a feature that
scans the face for signs of consciousness for the purpose of preventing attackers from using an
unconscious person's face to unlock their phone.
