Ransomware
The prevalence of cybercriminals in the past year, which, according to our analysis, were
responsible for 49% of cyberattacks in 2024, is consistent with the high volume of ransomware
attacks in 2024. The ransomware threat has been the leading type of attack in the cybercrime
arena for the past several years and is considered one of the top threats faced by organizations
of all sectors, geographical locations and sizes. The threat posed by ransomware is double:
the encryption of data on victims’ machines interrupts organizations’ operations, and data
exfiltration and extortion leads to the exposure of sensitive data, while also causing reputational
damage and financial loss (either due to the payment of ransom or due to fines the companies
are required to pay by authorities for failing to adhere to data protection regulations).
During 2024, ransomware gangs claimed responsibility for targeting 6,133 victims according to
dark web data leak and extortion websites. This represents an increase of 14% in the number
of claimed victims in comparison with 2023 (when ransomware gangs claimed a total of 5337
victims).
